All vehicle types — Overview

Midland Red (South) Limited was incorporated on 15th April 1981, with the name Dreamimage Limited, and was purchased by the National Bus Company (N.B.C.) who renamed it to Midland Red (South) Limited on 1st July 1981. Trading started on 6th September 1981, following the brake up of the Midland Red Omnibus Company Limited (MROC), with 163 vehicles and five depots depots at Banbury, Leamington Spa, Nuneaton, Rugby, and Stratford, operating services in Buckinghamshire, Northamptonshire, Oxfordshire and Warwickshire. In 1987, Midland Red (South) Limited was privitised and bought by Western Travel Limited.

On Friday 26th November 1993, Western Travel Limited was bought by Stagecoach Group plc., and from that date Midland Red (South) Limited traded with the name “Stagecoach Midland Red”, with the fleet being repainted into Stagecoach livery. In 1997, Stagecoach also acquired the business of Thames Travel Limited, Oxford, and the operations of this company were merged into those of Midland Red (South) under the name of “Stagecoach South Midlands”. Operations were rebranded as “Stagecoach in Warwickshire”, “Stagecoach in Banbury”, or “Stagecoach in Oxford”, depending on location, but each company continued to use their existing legal name and operator licence.

As part of the larger Stagecoach South Midlands, the Midland Red (South) depot at Banbury traded under the name “Stagecoach in Banbury”, but in March 2004, the Stagecoach South Midlands division was dissolved and Midland Red (South) and Thames Transit were separated with their own independent management. Being in Oxfordshire, the Banbury site and operations came under the control of Thames Transit Limited, with all operations in the county trading as “Stagecoach in Oxfordshire”. However, Banbury retained their Midland Red (South) Limited legal identity and operator licence until Sunday 28th February 2021, when Banbury depot came under the full control of Thames Transit Limited, using their legal lettering and operator licence.

On Sunday 12th October 2014, Stagecoach merged their United Counties Omnibus Company Limited operations in the East Midlands into Midland Red (South) Limited. From this time, United Counties depots at Northampton, Corby and Kettering came under the full control of Midland Red (South) Limited, with the combined operations trading as “Stagecoach Midlands”. The company Headquarters also moved to the former United Counties depot at Northampton.
