Midland Red (South) Limited was incorporated on 15th April 1981, with the name Dreamimage Limited, and was purchased by the National Bus Company (N.B.C.) who renamed it to Midland Red (South) Limited on 1st July 1981. Trading started on 6th September 1981, following the brake up of the Midland Red Omnibus Company Limited (MROC), with 163 vehicles and five depots depots at Banbury, Leamington Spa, Nuneaton, Rugby, and Stratford, operating services in Buckinghamshire, Northamptonshire, Oxfordshire and Warwickshire.
From late 1993, under the ownership of the Stagecoach Group plc, Midland Red (South) Limited traded with the name “Stagecoach Midland Red”, until this name was phased out in favour of “Stagecoach in Warwickshire” following a relaunch of the Stagecoach brand. Midland Red (South) Limited was partly merged with Thames Transit Limited (“Stagecoach Oxford”) to form “Stagecoach South Midlands”, but from March 2004 both these companies were operating independently again and that name has been dropped. The Midland Red (South) depot at Banbury trades under the name “Stagecoach in Oxfordshire” and is partly managed by Thames Transit Limited (also trading as “Stagecoach in Oxfordshire”) to aid intergration with operations in that county.
On 12th October 2014, Stagecoach merged their United Counties Omnibus Company Limited operations in the East Midlands into Midland Red (South) Limited. From this time, United Counties depots at Northampton, Corby and Kettering came under the legal control of Midland Red (South) Limited and vehicles show “Midland Red (South) Limited” legal lettering. The company Headquarters also moved to the former United Counties depot at Northampton.
