Service 246 (1928–1973)

Operated by Birmingham and Midland Motor Omnibus Company Limited

From Saturday 11th February 1928 until the company ceased operation of Black Country services at the end of business on Sunday 2nd December 1973, Birmingham and Midland Motor Omnibus Company Limited (BMMO—Midland “Red” Motor Services) allocated route number 246 to one of several short-working variations of Service 245.

The full Service 245 originally following the same route as the trams, but the last trams on this corridor were withdrawn on Saturday 1st March 1930. BMMO first started running buses on the tram route in 1924 (first as Service 84B, then as Service 157, and finally as Service 245) and there had always been short-working journeys at certain times of the day, but it wasn't until the company renumbered their network on Saturday 11th February 1928 that these journeys were allocated their own route number.
