Service D51: Service History

Service D51 (1958–1959)

Operated by Birmingham and Midland Motor Omnibus Company Limited

New Service D51 was introduced by Birmingham and Midland Motor Omnibus Company Limited (BMMO—Midland “Red” Motor Services) on Saturday 29th November 1958, as a local Droitwich Spa service. The service ran only on Saturdays, departing the Raven Hotel each hour between 0930 and 1730, for St. Peters Estate. The return journey departed St. Peters Estate at 47 minutes past each hour.

Service D50 was introduced from the same date, but neither were successful and both were withdrawn around seven months later.

Service D51 (1968–1971)

Operated by Birmingham and Midland Motor Omnibus Company Limited

A new circular local Droitwich Spa route was introduced by Birmingham and Midland Motor Omnibus Company Limited (BMMO—Midland “Red” Motor Services) on Saturday 26th October 1968, serving housing estates to the east and west of the A38. Service D50 ran clockwise and Service D51 ran anti-clockwise. During peak times, certain journeys were extended to or from the Industrial Estate on Hampton Road.

Monday to Saturday, there were up to 26 departures from the Town Centre, to give an approximate 30-minute frequency throughout the day. However, except for the Saturday working, there was not a regular pattern with D50 or D51 departures so people waiting on the estates probably had to guess which direction their bus was coming from! There was no Sunday service offered.

All local Droitwich Spa services were operated by Bromsgrove depot, and were sold to Everton Coaches Limited a few months before that site closed. The ‘D’-prefix Droitwich Spa routes were last run by BMMO on Saturday 3rd April 1971.
