Service 420: Timetable Changes

On Saturday 11th February 1928, Birmingham and Midland Motor Omnibus Company Limited (BMMO—Midland “Red” Motor Services) again renumbered their stage carriage services into groups depending on their geographical location, stating with Service 100. Route numbers 1–99 were not used to avoid confusion with Birmingham Corporation routes.
- Service 301 running between Worcester, Broadwas, Bromyard, and Hereford, is renumbered to Service 420.

Update to the Timetable Books dated Saturday 2nd October 1954, effective from Saturday 12th March 1955.
- An additional Service 420 return journey on Saturdays between Worcester and Bromyard. Departing Worcester at 06:00 and returning from Bromyard at 06:50.
- Service 420 short-working Market Day (Thursday) journey at 11:15 between Bromyard and Stoke Lacy, and the return journey at 11:30, is withdrawn.
9th January 1991
- Midland Red West Limited introduce an evening journey on Service 420 running between Bromyard and Hereford on Thursday evenings only. This journey was operated under contract from Hereford & Worcester County Council, and had previously been operated by Bromyard Omnibus Company.
14th May 1994
- An additional short-working journey for Service 420 is added on Fridays only, departing Worcester at 2305 and arriving in Bromyard at 2342.
26th May 2001
- Minor timetable changes to Service 420, with one early morning journey between Worcester and Bromyard re-timed.
2nd September 2001
- Service 418 is introduced between Hereford and Withington March (Cross Keys Inn), running via Ledbury Road, Lugwardine and Bartestree. Evening journeys continue to Bromyard, running every 90 minutes along the Service 420 route between Cross Keys Inn and Bromyard.
1st September 2002
- Service 317 is withdrawn and partly replaced by an additional Service 420 journey between Worcester (King’s School), Bromyard and Hereford.
- Service 420 frequency is increased to operate one journey per hour in each direction.
6th January 2003
- Short-working Service 421 journeys between Worcester and Rushwick are renumbered to Service 420 with adjusted times.

County Council contracts changesShow All
First Midland Red Buses Limited won several new contracts from Worcestershire County Council. Most of these were previously operated by Probus Management Limited (trading as Pete’s Travel), who withdrew from all of their contract work in Worcestershire at this time. Other contracts were won or lost from Herefordshire County Council.
- Service 420 journey from Bromyard to Worcester departing at 1830 on Monday to Friday is withdrawn and partly replaced by extending Service 420 from Hereford at 1740 to serve Bringsty and Whitbourne.
- Service 420 journey from Kings School, Worcester, to Hereford departing at 1603 no longer serves Kings School.
6th September 2004
Changes made to a number of services in the Worcester area, starting from Monday 6th September 2004.
- New route and timetable for Service 420, with Service 419 variation withdrawn. Service 420 rerouted at Withington to run via Withies Road, no longer serving White Stone, and now terminates at Hereford Bus Station, not St. Peter’s Square.
- With the loss of a Herefordshire Council contract, Service 420 frequency is reduced from hourly to every two hours in each direction.
31st August 2014
- New timetable for Service 420. From this time, all Sunday journeys are withdrawn due to the expiry of a Herefordshire Council contract, and times on other days are slightly revised. English Concession Permits are now available to use throughout the 0915 journey from Worcester to Hereford.

Hereford depot closedShow All
At the end of operation on Saturday 5th September 2015, Hereford depot was closed with all services operated from that site being withdrawn. From the follow day, a number of services operated from Worcester depot were also changed.
- All Service 420 journeys between Hereford and Worcester, and evening Service 420 journeys between Hereford and Bromyard, are withdrawn by First Midland Red Buses Limted. D.R.M. (Bromyard) Limited (“DRM Busâ€), who previously operated Service 420 journeys between Bromyard and Hereford, extend their operations to Worcester as a replacement service.
- Afternoon Service 420 return journey between Worcester and Bromyard, operated by Worcester depot, continues to operate. This journey is extended to Flaggoners Green, but no longer serves Whitbourne Bus Shelter on the return journey to Worcester. One return morning journey between Worcester and Flaggoners Green introduced, also operated by Worcester depot.

New Herefordshire contracts (“Village Linksâ€)Show All
From Sunday 3rd September 2017, First Midland Red Buses Limited started operating new services in the Bromyard and Ledbury areas as part of a new 7-year contract won under tendering from Herefordshire Council. First Midland Red market these new services with the brand name “Village Links†and all the routes are advertised in a new 14-page timetable.
- Although existing Service 420 journeys are not part of the new Herefordshire Council contract, these are now included as part of the new “Village Links†brand, and are shown in the new timetable.
- With the contract to operate Service 482, Service 672, Service 674 and one Service 400 journey being lost by DRM (Bromyard) Limited (“DRM Busâ€) and passing to First Midland Red Buses Limited, the owner of DRMbus withdraws from the ticket agreement on Service 420. From Monday 4th September 2017, no First tickets are accepted on DRMbus’ Service 420 journeys and likewise no DRMbus tickets are accepted of First's Service 420 journeys.
- The 17:00 Service 420 return journey between Worcester and Bromyard now also runs on Mondays to Fridays during school holidays (previously this journey only ran on school days only). This change is a result of DRM (Bromyard) Limited (“DRM Busâ€) withdrawing from their ticket agreement with First.
