Service 427: Service History

Service 427 (1949–1978)

Operated by Birmingham and Midland Motor Omnibus Company Limited

Service 427 was operated by Birmingham and Midland Motor Omnibus Company Limited (BMMO—Midland “Red” Motor Services) from the late 1940s (exact date needed) until 1978. The service offered a link between Clifton Upon Teme, Tedstone Wafre and Bromyard on Thursdays, which was Market Day in Bromyard.

In 1950 there were six departures from Bromyard each Thursday but only two of these ran the full route to Clifton Upon Teme, with the others being short-working journeys to either Tedstone Wafre or High House crossroads. Ten years later this had been reduced to two full journeys and one short-working to High House crossroads.

There were also additional journeys offered on Saturdays which ran from Worcester to Clifton Upon Teme before continuing to Tedstone Wafre, and by the late 1950s to Bromyard. Two return journeys were offered each Saturday over the full route from Worcester.

The Thursday journeys were withdrawn by Midland Red Omnibus Company Limited (MROC) with the introduction of the “Wandaward” MAP scheme on Saturday 11th March 1978, and replaced by new Service 419 which ran two return journeys between Bromyard and Clifton Upon Teme. Saturday journeys continued for a few months, but these were soon withdrawn and not replaced.
