Service 380: Service History

Service 380 (1931–1976)

Operated by Birmingham and Midland Motor Omnibus Company Limited

Service 380 was introduced by the Birmingham and Midland Motor Omnibus Company Limited (BMMO—Midland “Red” Motor Services) on Wednesday 18th November 1931, running between Great Malvern, Sherrards Green, Madresfield, and Worcester, on Wednesdays and Saturdays only. Bus services along this route had been operated by George Woodward of Guarlford since the late 1920s, and the new BMMO service ran in direct competition to these. To further meet the competition, BMMO introduced additional journeys on Fridays from Friday 1st April 1932.

In 1932, Mr Woodward and BMMO entered into an agreement whereby BMMO would surrender their operations on Service 374 and in return, Mr Wooward would withdraw from competing against BMMO's Service 380. The agreement came into effect on Monday 26th September 1932 and from this date, as they no longer had to worry about the competition, BMMO also withdrew their Friday journeys on Service 380.

From Wednesday 16th May 1934, Service 380 was rerouted between Great Malvern and Sherrards Green to service Great Malvern railway station and Barnards Green. At the same time, the route was changed slightly to call at the village centre in Callow End, turning round at the small green near the Blue Bell Inn, having previously only run to the outskirts of the village via the turning at Stanbrook Abbey.

Further route changes came into effect from Wednesday 9th January 1935, when Service 380 was extended to run from Barnards Green along St Andrew's Road then back towards Sherrards Green via Poolbrook. By the late 1940s, this loop was the starting point for the service, and neither Great Malvern nor the railway station were served.

Service 380 survived the mass withdrawal of rural services in April 1971, and continued to run to the same timetable as it did in 1960. There was a change of route from Saturday 1st June 1974 to service the newly built Brook Farm Estate between Poolbrook and Barnards Green.

When Malvern depot closed on Friday 1st October 1976, Service 380 was withdrawn along with the local Malvern services. There was no direct replacement by Midland Red, and a new service supported by Hereford and Worcester County Council operated by small independent operator replaced it.
