Service 374: Service History

Service 374 (1928–1932)

Operated by Birmingham and Midland Motor Omnibus Company Limited

On Saturday 11th February 1928, Birmingham and Midland Motor Omnibus Company Limited (BMMO—Midland “Red” Motor Services) renumber all of their services. At this time, Service 278 running between Great Malvern, Guarlford, Hanley Swan, Welland and Castlemorton became Service 374.

The route was reduced on Wednesday 18th September 1929, to run only between Great Malvern and Welland but was extended again, this time to Upton-upon-Severn, from Thursday 17th April 1930. The route was also changed at this time to run via St. Andrews's Road and no longer served Guarlford. There were three journeys in each direction on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays.

In September 1932, BMMO exchanged their operation of Service 374 with the operations of local operator Mr George Woodward, for his service that ran in competition on BMMO's Service 380. The agreement came into effect on Monday 26th September 1932, with Service 374 being operated by Woodward from this date.

Operated by Birmingham and Midland Motor Omnibus Company Limited

On Sunday 23rd February 1947, BMMO introduced a new Sunday-only Service 374 running between Great Malvern, Upton-upon-Severn, Pershore, and Evesham. This service was intended for people visiting Evesham's Avonside Hospital but continued past the hospital to Evesham Town Centre.

Service 374 was rerouted from Sunday 17th December 1950, to run via Cropthorne and Charlton between Pershore and Evesham, but otherwise remained unchanged until it was withdrawn on Saturday 6th January 1968.

Service 374 (1968–1975)

Operated by Birmingham and Midland Motor Omnibus Company Limited

A new Service 374 was introduced on Saturday 6th January 1968, the same date the previous one was withdrawn, to replace part of Service 364 which had seen the Upton-upon-Severn to Tewkesbury section of the route withdrawn, and thus no longer served Longdon.

Two journeys in each direction were operated by Worcester depot on Wednesdays only, between Upton-upon-Severn and Longdon. These were shown in timetables with Service 364, but no connections were available and anyone wishing to travel through using Midland Red buses would have needed to wait in Upton-upon-Severn for well over an hour. The Service 374 timetable remained unchanged until it was withdawn.
