Service 170: Service History

Service 170 (1929–1967)

Operated by Bristol Tramways and Carriage Company Limited

Bristol Tramways and Carriage Company Limited (BTCC) introduced Service 170 on Sunday 20th October 1929, running between Cheltenham Spa, Tewkesbury, Upton-upon-Severn, and Great Malvern. This services arrived in Great Malvern via Guarlford, Barnards Green, and Church Street, then ran along Graham Road and Moorlands Road to teminate at Link Top car park.

Before the war, three return journeys operated each day, Monday to Saturday, with two return journeys on Sundays. After the war, the frequency increased to a peak of six return journeys during the 1950s.

On Sunday 1st June 1952, Service 170 and BTCC's only other route in Malvern, Service 112 from Gloucester, were extended from Link Top to terminate at Malvern Link Railway Station. The station yard was used by BTCC for a number of years as an outstation to house buses used on their routes in Malvern.

Bristol Tramways and Carriage Company Limited was renamed to Bristol Omnibus Company Limited in 1957, and Service 170 was renumbered to Service 546 on Sunday 25th June 1967.

From c. March 1968, certain journeys on Wednesdays only were diverted to run via Ripple and Uckinghall. This was done at the request of the Local Authority to provide a replacement for a service that had been withdrawn by Astons in late 1967.
