The Birmingham, Blackheath, Dudley, and Gornal Wood service operated by Birmingham and Midland Motor Omnibus Company Limited (BMMO—Midland “Red” Motor Services) was renumbered to Service 140 on Saturday 11th February 1928. Short-working variations of Service 140 ran in the mornings and late evenings as Service 141 for journeys between Dudley and Gornal Wood, and as Service 142 for journeys between Bearwood and Dudley.
By 1940, the Service 140 route had been shortened to run only between Birmingham, Blackheath, and Dudley. The short-working variation Service 141, and the section of the Service 140 route between Dudley and Gornal Wood, was partly been replaced by new Service D40.
Operation of Service 140 and Service D40 passed to West Midlands Passenger Transport Executive (WMPTE) on Monday 3rd December 1973, as part of the transfer of the BMMO Transfer of Services and Assets to WMPTE.
